The Uffizi Gallery

Situated inside Piazza della Repubblica, the Uffizi Gallery is the oldest museum in the world as well as the first museum opened for public viewing. Designed by Vasari in the 16th century, the palace eventually became a gallery when the second floor was closed in order to house and arrange the Grand Ducal collection of statues, paintings, jewelry, medals, weapons, etc. Today, the gallery owns nearly 4,800 works, some of which remain in storage or on loan; inside the 45 exhibition rooms one may view 1,700 paintings, 300 sculptures, 46 tapestries, 14 pieces of furniture, and ceramics. Today, under the “Nuovi Uffizi” project, the “Room of Wonders,” which contains a large collection of Medici paintings, ancient sculptures, and pearl decorations, has been reopened to the public. Also, the restoration/renovation initiative has allowed for 18 new rooms containing the works of 16th–18th century foreign painters to be opened for the public.
