Florence was born in 59 BC as a Roman colony. By the 13th century, the city was rich from wool and textiles trading as well as the banking sector. Under Cosimo de’ Medici, the Medici family, a large banking power, gained political control of the city for nearly three centuries.
Throughout this time, artists, architects, and sculptors thrived from numerous wealthy patrons, and thus, the Renaissance was born. Today, we can marvel at the historical and artistic importance of the city. Some of the most noteworthy locations are mentioned below.
In the heart of the city are located the Duomo, Campanile, Baptistry, and Museo dell Opera del Duomo. Other areas, such as, Piazza della Signoria with its copy of the David, the Palazzo Vecchio, and the Uffizi gallery, the largest art gallery in Italy, are easily reached by a short walk. Too, one should make the time to admire the beautiful frescoes that decorate the insides of the churches Santa Croce and Santa Maria Novella.
On the other side of the Arno River, which may be crossed via Ponte Vecchio, a bridge that is home to many dazzling jewelry shops, one will find the Palazzo Pitti, a large palace, that holds many lovely galleries as well as the expansive and breathtaking Boboli gardens. Also in the area is Santo Spirito, a church designed by Brunelleschi.
During our tours, we explore all of the areas mentioned as well as any places you may wish to visit. If you would like to create your own itinerary, we will be more than happy to show you around your chosen destinations.
